Art Space Argyros Canava :
Exhibition |
Art Exhibition housed in
an Old Wine Canava |
Art Space Exhibition is housed in an old Santorini cave house wine cellar and old wine
distillery in Exo Gonia. A harmonious coexistence of history and the tradition of winemaking, it marries the Art of Yesterday with the Art of Today.
Art Space, a Cultural Center for Contemporary Art, started out with one dream; to protect history, save
tradition and promote Art. The visitor of Art Space has the opportunity to choose among significant works
of art by Greek as well as foreign artists, and to buy wines produced at the winery. |
Art Space : a Cultural Center for Contemporary Art |
Art Space did not start out with the common ambitions of a Gallery. Nor did it follow
the safe path of a typical Museum. Most important of all, it has not stopped the production of wine and tsikoudia (Greek Grappa). |
The History & The Making |
The earthquake in 1956 and the urbanism that followed it led the island to desertion.
The old estate gave in to time, while tourism induced new dynamics.
The space gave off such an evocative simplicity that all choices looked self-evident. The traces of the past
had to be preserved, as they were an invaluable bequest for the future. The decision was to combine both in
an original way. The wine would continue to be wafting through the space with its aroma. The marcs would continue
to be distilled in the old distillery. The old tools remained in their place to remind the visitor of the
old craftsmanship. Everything is as it used to be but with a sense of continuity.
In 1999, Art Space was ready to sail on its new route. Antonios Argyros of Nikolaos renovated the place with
total respect to its original form. The Winery went back to operation and it "set sail" for a new journey.
More than 250 top Greek and foreign artists entrusted it with their works and the underground areas were inundated
with colour and artistic figures. Thousands of visitors have come through its heavy doors to come across a Santorini
that does not rest in the glory of its unique beauty, or in the self-complacency of its past; a Santorini
that inspires artists and, at the same time, hosts Art in all its forms. |
